Why Massage Matters
The Essential Contribution of Massage Therapy to Post-Mastectomy & Breast Cancer Rehabilitation
Massage therapy plays a significant role in post-mastectomy and breast cancer recovery by addressing physical and emotional challenges associated with the treatment process. Here’s how:
1
Pain Management:
Massage can help alleviate post-surgery pain and discomfort by reducing muscle tension, promoting relaxation, and releasing endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers.
2
Lymphatic Drainage:
Manual lymphatic drainage techniques used in massage help reduce swelling (lymphedema) by promoting the movement of lymphatic fluid. This is particularly beneficial for patients who have undergone lymph node removal during mastectomy surgery.
3
Scar Tissue Management:
Massage can help soften and mobilize scar tissue, improving flexibility and range of motion in the affected area. This is crucial for restoring function and reducing the risk of complications such as adhesions.
4
Emotional Support:
Breast cancer treatment can be emotionally taxing, and massage provides a safe and nurturing environment for patients to relax, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. Therapeutic touch can also help patients reconnect with their bodies after surgery.
5
Improved Quality of Life:
Regular massage sessions can enhance overall well-being by addressing common side effects of breast cancer treatment, such as fatigue, insomnia, and depression. It promotes a sense of empowerment and self-care during the recovery journey.
6
Educational Support:
Massage therapists trained in oncology massage can provide valuable education and guidance on self-massage techniques, scar management strategies, and safe exercise practices customized to the individual needs of breast cancer survivors.
Overall, massage therapy serves as a complementary approach to traditional medical treatment, supporting breast cancer survivors in their physical and emotional recovery journey and improving their quality of life post-mastectomy.
Session Frequency
Determining the Ideal Frequency for Post-Mastectomy & Breast Cancer Recovery Massage
The frequency of Post-Mastectomy & Breast Cancer Recovery Massage sessions can vary depending on individual needs, treatment stage, and therapeutic goals. Here’s a general guideline, not all general guidelines are for all people:
1
Early Recovery Stage:
During the initial recovery phase, when post-operative pain and swelling are most acute, clients may benefit from more frequent sessions. Typically, 1-2 sessions per week in the first few weeks post-mastectomy can help manage pain, reduce swelling, and promote healing. This is typically lymphatic massage.
2
Mid-Recovery Stage:
As the immediate post-operative effects diminish, clients may transition to less frequent sessions, such as 1 session every 1-2 weeks. These sessions focus on ongoing pain management, scar tissue management, and improving range of motion.
3
Late Recovery and Maintenance Stage:
Once clients progress further in their recovery and establish more stability, they may reduce the frequency of massage sessions to 1 session every 3-4 weeks or as needed. These sessions continue to address residual symptoms, support emotional well-being, and provide ongoing self-care education.
4
Long-Term Maintenance:
After completing the initial recovery phase, some clients may choose to continue with periodic maintenance sessions for long-term support and wellness. This could involve scheduling a massage every 4-6 weeks or as recommended by their healthcare provider or massage therapist.
Ultimately, the frequency of Post-Mastectomy & Breast Cancer Recovery Massage should be fitted to each individual’s specific needs, treatment progress, and preferences. It’s essential to communicate openly with your healthcare team and massage therapist to develop a personalized treatment plan that optimizes your recovery and well-being.

As with any medical treatment, there is always some small risk if you are compromised: If you have had lymph nodes removed, or previously had lymphedema, or are currently at risk for lymphedema, there is the possibility of occurrence. If you are still undergoing treatment, massage may be taxing for you. *If you are currently experiencing lymphedema, you should consult with an expert in care for that, rather than seek massage. For anyone currently undergoing treatment, or recently ending it, we politely ask that you provide us with a doctor’s note so that your whole support team can be made aware and provide for your safety. If you have any doubts about whether massage is right for you, please check with your healthcare provider. The more information we have, the more we can help. We also require a doctor’s note if you intend to submit to insurance with our invoices.
