What are the Benefits of Massage Therapy?

There is a lot of debate out there on what the real benefits of massage therapy are. We are proud to say that we are a science-based company, which means we are not selling false claims about what the benefits of massage are. (It does not: Detoxify, remove lactic acid, increase circulation, increase lymphatic flow, fix you, realign you or break down scar tissue) But it can:

1

Aid in local circulation issues such as swelling and skin health

3

Reduce stress and anxiety

4

Reduce spasms and modulate pain

5

Stimulate the nervous tissue

The pain that you experience is most likely derived from many factors. Massage Therapy also works by multiple mechanisms.

Social: Environmental and social factors — work stress, relationships, financial stability, healthcare access, culture, support systems, and daily life demands. Massage: Therapist interaction provides a meaningful social connection.

Psychological: Thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and experiences — stress, anxiety, fear of movement, expectations, past experiences, and increased attention or sensitivity to pain. Massage: Calms the limbic and autonomic nervous system.

Biological: Physical and physiological factors — injury, inflammation, nerve sensitivity, movement limitations, overall health, sleep, recovery capacity, conditioning, and stress tolerance. Massage: May have an analgesic effect on descending pain pathways.

The CDC, ACP, and New York State now recommend Massage Therapy for pain management.

In 2022, the CDC updated an important guideline for adults managing pain by including non-pharmaceutical approaches to pain management. This is a long-awaited decision for Massage Therapists, acupuncturists, and Physical Therapists.

New York State Law

Assembly Bill 273 · Effective December 23, 2022

Governor Kathy Hochul signed Assembly Bill 273 into law, which includes massage therapy on the list of non-opioid treatment alternatives for patients seeking pain management from neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

A 273 requires medical practitioners to consider, discuss, and refer or prescribe non-opioid treatments — including massage therapy — before starting opioid treatment.

If you are wondering if massage therapy is for you, the answer is it is a low-cost, low-risk intervention that should be tried before moving on to therapies that have downsides. We know many types of pain do improve on their own, but tools that allow you to manage your pain are a great advantage to you and your health.

The CDC, NYS, and the American College of Physicians recommend massage before opioid care

Testimonials

What our clients say
I was in pain, and I mean by the truck loads. Stupidly, I ignored it, popped some 800mg Advil and kept chugging along. After a few days of this, I woke up unable to walk upright without being in teeth-clenching misery. I couldn’t put the pain off any more. I asked around and a friend pointed me to Body Mechanics. Luckily, a spot had just opened up and I hobbled over to the office like a man three times my age. I’m not a man that believes in miracles, but believe me when I say a miracle was performed. I don’t know how she knew, but she knew exactly where everything hurt and fixed it. Massage therapy doesn’t even come close to describing what I experienced. I walked out of the office standing straight up, sore in a good way, and, most importantly, pain free. It was worth every damn penny and then some. Do yourself a favor, don’t wait for the pain to win, just go here.
