Our Cupping Program
Professional Cupping Therapy
The cupping program at Body Mechanics is a full-body or partial-body massage therapy program that replaces regular effleurage or long stroking techniques with the use of dynamic moving cupping. These cups create a lift rather than a downward pressure like traditional massage. Regular massage therapy techniques will also be utilized and worked into the treatment as needed as cupping acts on the surface skin and fascia. One area of focus can be chosen for static cupping where the cups stay stationary. This is still a medical program that focuses on wellness, body awareness, and improved physical health.
Techniques & Approach
Cupping Techniques We Offer
We use two types of silicone cups. Some of our cups are gliding cups and some of our cups are stationary cups. Mixing the two types allows for a varied and complex sensory experience.
We combine gliding cupping techniques over the larger areas of the body, and choose one target area for static cupping or static cupping with body movement.
Cupping can be a fantastic addition to your regular therapeutic or orthopedic massage treatment and is targeted just like our other treatments, including deep tissue massage. Goals for cupping treatments can be defined as: reduced pain and muscle sensitivity and increased range of motion where large joints are located. By combining cupping with outcome-based massage, we provide a multi-sensory experience that can add to your therapeutic experience as a whole. Cupping is a sensory-based experience that can alter the nervous system.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Cupping Therapy in NYC
What is cupping therapy, and how does it work?
Cupping therapy uses suction to lift the skin and fascia, helping release muscle tension, create more space, and support recovery. At Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage, our NYC therapists use modern silicone and vacuum cups to deliver precise, therapeutic results customized to your needs.
What conditions can cupping therapy help with?
Cupping may assist with:
- Neck and shoulder tightness (common with NYC desk work)
- Back pain
- Post-workout soreness
- Reduced mobility
- Stress-related tension
Our Midtown location sees many New Yorkers using cupping as part of an orthopedic recovery plan.
Does cupping hurt, and will it leave marks?
Cupping rarely hurts, but you may feel a warming or pulling sensation. Circular marks can appear from blood being pulled to the surface and capillaries breaking, but they are not bruises and typically fade within 3-7 days. Your therapist adjusts suction levels to match your comfort.
Is cupping safe for athletes and active New Yorkers?
Yes. Many runners, dancers, weightlifters, and fitness enthusiasts in NYC use cupping to speed recovery and relieve overuse tension. At Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage, cupping is integrated into orthopedic-based sessions for mobility and performance.
How long does a typical cupping session last?
A cupping treatment is usually included within a 60-90 minute orthopedic massage session, allowing the therapist to combine cupping with manual therapy, assessment, and targeted treatment.
Can cupping help with tech-neck and posture issues from long NYC workdays?
Absolutely. Many New Yorkers experience chronic upper-back and neck tension from laptops, commuting, and phone use. Cupping helps decompress tight fascia, reduce stiffness, and restore healthier movement patterns.
What should I avoid after my cupping session?
We recommend avoiding:
- Intense workouts for the next 12 hours
- Hot showers or saunas immediately afterward
- Direct sun exposure on cupped areas
These precautions help ensure your skin and fascia recover properly.
Is cupping therapy good for stress relief?
Yes. Cupping can cause euphoria and reduces muscular restrictions, which can create a deep sense of relaxation. Many NYC clients use cupping as part of their stress-management routine, especially during busy work seasons.
How soon will I feel relief from cupping therapy?
Many clients feel lighter, looser, and more mobile after just one session. Chronic conditions or long-term tension may require multiple visits. Your therapist at Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage will recommend the best plan for your goals.
Is cupping safe for people with sensitive skin or medical conditions?
Cupping is generally safe, but people with certain conditions, including skin sensitivities, fragile skin, people who are pregnant, those with clotting disorders, or those with recent injuries, should consult with their provider first. Our therapists will review your health history during your session to ensure cupping is applied safely and appropriately for your body.
