Pre-Event Massage: The Perfect Warm-Up

Before the big event, your body needs more than just physical training; it needs to be mentally and physically primed for peak performance. Booking a massage before your event can help prepare you by getting you more in tune with your body, can help you identify problem areas before they start, help you maintain your range of motion and flexibility without taxing your body with a workout and most of all make you feel great.

Enhances proprioception and sensory awareness.
Promotes rest and help with overtraining and fatigue
Timing your massage before your event:
If you have not had massage before, we highly recommend that you time your massage 2 days before your event, so that you can reap the benefits of massage but not risk being sore. Some people find that even with gentle touch they can still feel the massage a few days later.
If you regularly get massages and know your body's response to touch, you can come in anytime pre-event if you are generally not sore after massage. Many people come the night before and it helps with the listed benefits but also the 'pre-game jitters.
After the Event
Post-Event Massage: Accelerate Your Recovery
Recover Better, Perform Better
After pushing your limits, it's crucial to give your body the care it deserves. Our Post-Event Massage therapy focuses on alleviating muscle tension, reducing soreness and promoting recovery, so you can return to training sooner and more effectively.
Eases Muscle Pain
Gentle techniques soothe sore muscles. Putting your body into 'rest and digest' for better recovery.
Restores Flexibility
When you're sore it is hard to move. Incorporating massage, stretching and mobility techniques in a massage can help you move better, faster.
Help treat any post-event muscular injuries
with therapeutic touch and movement.
Timing your massage post event:
While you can generally come in any time post event, we can typically do our best work 1-2 days out from your sporting activity if you are dealing with an injury.
If you are coming to a post event and you are unusually sore, please wait until you feel like touch will be comfortable for you. We can adjust the pressure and depth of the massage but we do want it to be comfortable for you.
In the days and weeks following your event it is a great time to work on any issues that surfaced during your event, to prepare for your future training and activities.

Pre-Race Massage
1–3 Days Before Race
Use light to medium pressure — especially if it's a new therapist or you're not used to massage. Don't try new techniques before a race. The goal is to activate your nervous system and get your head in the game.
Light Pressure
Medium Pressure
Post-Race Recovery
1–3 Days After Race
Post-race massage is mostly about comfort. For general work, if you're too sore to touch, wait an extra day. Pressure and depth are based on how your body feels.
Post-Race + Injury
2–3 Days After Race
If you have an injury, a massage is most helpful 2–3 days out. This gives initial inflammation time to settle while still addressing tissue restriction early.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pre-Event & Post-Event Massage NYC
1. What is the difference between pre-event and post-event massage?
Pre-event massage prepares your body for performance by increasing circulation, warming up tissues, and improving mobility. Post-event massage focuses on recovery, reducing soreness, flushing metabolic waste, and restoring range of motion. At Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage, your session is customized to your event timing and intensity.
2. Who should get a pre-event or post-event massage in NYC?
These sessions benefit:
- NYC Marathon runners
- Triathletes and cyclists

- Weightlifters and CrossFit athletes
- Weekend-warrior competitors
- Participants in local races, tournaments, and fitness events
Any NYC athlete looking to optimize performance or recover faster can benefit.
3. How soon before an event should I schedule my pre-event massage?
Most athletes book pre-event massages 24–72 hours before competition to prepare tissues without causing soreness. Your therapist can recommend exact timing based on your sport and intensity.
4. How soon after an event should I get a post-event massage?
Gentle recovery massage can be performed within hours, but deeper work is best scheduled 24–48 hours after to reduce inflammation and soreness. Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage tailors pressure and techniques based on how your body feels after the event.
5. Does pre-event massage improve performance for NYC athletes?
Yes. Pre-event massage can enhance mobility, increase joint readiness, and improve muscle activation, leading to smoother, more efficient movement. Many NYC runners and performers use it to feel more prepared and balanced heading into competition.
6. Can post-event massage help reduce soreness after races or competitions?
Absolutely. Post-event massage supports faster recovery by improving circulation, reducing muscle stiffness, and helping clear metabolic waste. It's especially helpful after endurance events like the NYC Marathon, Brooklyn Half, or long-distance cycling.
7. What techniques are used during pre-event or post-event massage?
Techniques may include:
- Dynamic stretching
- Compression
- Light fascia work
- Joint mobilization
- Effleurage and petrissage

Techniques are adjusted based on event type, sport, and whether it's a pre- or post-event session.
